Greater Trenton Jewish Cemetery Project- July 2021

 

Greater Trenton Jewish Cemetery Project has made great strides in rehabilitating the People of Truth Memorial Section on Cedar Lane. That said, much more remains to be done.  GTJCP is grateful to everyone whose financial support has enabled the improvements and welcomes online donations at https://gtjcp.org/donate/   Docent-guided tours of the Cemeteries on Cedar Lane and Pittman Avenue can be schedules on the website as well.

Downtown Trenton Harry Podmore 1929 Although there were a disproportionate number of professionals (Physicians, Attorneys, Certified Public Accountants, Dentists), most reverted to the family business of selling merchandise. However, they did it on a much larger scale. Trenton was known for its ‘downtown.’ Between Willow and City Hall, there were 100’s of stores, both small and large. Avraham and Rivkah Swern

  In front of the headstone for Avraham and Rivkah Swern is a stone that is tilted backwards.  It marks the final resting place of Morris Freedman, who passed away on October 29, 1919. He is listed in the 1900 Trenton City Directory.   He was apparently in business with the Vine family with the shirt manufacturer Vine and Freedman.    There is a genealogy website that cites Freedman's business dealings here. Chapter 2-3: Simon (The Third Child of Benjamin & Bessie Wein) Simon (b. 1859; Lida, Vilna) was the third child of Benajmin and Bessie Wein. He married Libby (Leba or Bessie) Abramsohn (b. 1862) in Lida in 1883-1884. Simon and Libby had eight children: Rebecca, Emma, Jacob, Rose Leah, Louis A., Benjamin, Rachel and Norman. Simon immigrated via Hamburg on April 28, 1896 at the age of 37 on the SS California and arrived NY on May 15, 1896. Libby arrived in either 1898 or 1899.
