Dear Jewish Historical Society of Trenton,
My name is Karl Krotke-Crandall. I am a historian with Northern Arizona
University. I'm reaching out to you regarding a current research and
preservation project I am working on with students here in Flagstaff, AZ. If
you will indulge me for a moment, I’ll explain the project and what I hope may
be a connection to your group.
Last year, we discovered a collection of Holocaust survivor audio recordings in
our archives at NAU. The collection was left on the shelves for more than 40
years with only a note attached reading “Delaware Valley Holocaust Committee.” I’ve
taken the steps to preserve these recordings via digitization and now my
students and I are researching how this collection came to NAU. Our finding
thus far show that the collection is a combination of survivors from Arizona
and survivors from your area, collected by a woman named Joan Keats. We’ve been
able to locate former students and the family of Joan who recall her working in
and around your area with a Cantor by the name of David Wisnia. From our
conversations with Joan’s family and former peers, we believe that there may be
another portion of the collection somewhere in your area. Thus my email. I’m
trying to locate any one who may have known Joan or David, their work, and
whether the collection may still exist. If so, and it is in need of preservation,
we’d like to ensure that happens.
To be clear, I’m not soliciting any one for money for our project. We want to
ensure that any survivor who recorded their testimony with Joan in the 1980s is
preserved for future generations. In the long run, the collection we currently
have will be preserved with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC.
I appreciate you willingness to read my lengthy email to you. If you, or any
one in your organization might have any information that could help us in our
work, please feel free to share my contact information. Respectfully,
Karl Krotke-Crandall
