Sukkot

Sukkot Sukkot commemorates the years that the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land, and celebrates the way in which  God  protected them under difficult desert conditions. Sukkot is also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, or the Feast of Booths. You shall dwell in sukkot seven days...in order that future generations may know that I made the Israelite people live in sukkot when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I the Lord your God. Leviticus 23:42 The word sukkot mean huts (some translations of the bible use the word booths) and building a hut is the most obvious way in which Jews celebrate the festival. Every Jewish family will build an open-air structure in which to live during the holiday. The essential thing about the hut is that it should have a roof of branches and leaves, through which those inside can see the sky, and that it should be a temporary and flimsy thing. The Sukkot ritual is to take four types of plant mat...

10 Yiddish Words to Get You Through This Quarantine

10 Yiddish Words to Get You Through This Quarantine (and you don’t have to be Jewish) We’ve been self-quarantining for 40-plus days and, quite frankly, we’re running out of steam.   Here’s some helpful Yiddish vocabulary to help describe our current  situation…. 1. Tsedrayte adj. (tsuh-DRATE) All mixed up, confused. Before the Covid-19 virus, tsedrayte meant we couldn’t remember if we promised to meet a friend for lunch on  Thursday or Friday. Now we don’t know what day of the week it is. These  days, just getting the mail makes us tsedrayte. Do we leave  the letters on the floor for 24 hours? Do we wipe the package before we  put it on the floor or wash our hands and then wipe the package? And  what do we do after we open it? 2. Shpilkes (SHPILL-kiss) Impatience, restlessness. Before Covid-19,  when our young kids had “ants in their pants,” we’d tell them to go  outside and play. Now, however, we have to mask them up fi...

Status of Cemeteries - May 2020

Image
Shirley Nabutovsky   Amanda,  I was at the cemetery yesterday.  I love the new gates, signage, and sidewalk. I could tell you stories of over 50 years of broken sidewalk, poison ivy on the tombstones along with a huge tree bent over, my dad's grave sinking numerous times, and no access to my grandparents double headstone because of a huge fallen tree.  Those are all cleaned up now.  The tree at my grandparents BASH was taken away a few years ago, however no one, except me, knows that under all the dirt are 2-foot stones each with information of date of death, etc.  I once took a snow shovel and tried to dig but I'm not strong so I gave up. I  once found a gun so I called 911 and Hamilton Twp police took 1 hour to get to the cemetery because they didn't know where it was!  Turns out  it was a BB gun. The police said it was a good thing I called because in that neighborhood you never know.  I have had poison ivy and sumac poisonin...

Mar 2020 [Trenton's Jews] New comment on Mailbox March 2019. Joel Sommer   <noreply-comment@blogger.com>   Unsubscribe Apr 8, 2020, 8:51 PM (12 hours ago) Joel Sommer  has left a new comment on your post " Mailbox March 2019 ": I was born in Trenton in 1946. At an early age, my grandfather Benjamin Kantor and I would walk to the Union Street Schul on Saturday mornings and during these walks I learned everything I ever needed to know. I know that my grandfather was a leader of the Workers of Truth and if you wanted an aliyah, you went to Mr Kantor. I read the above article and am trying to put pieces together. My grandfather was the first of siblings to come from Russia and at Ellis Island changed his name from Kantorovitz to Kantor. He was responsible for bringing over his siblings, many of whom were rabbis. i believe that the above referenced Rabbi Kantorowitz ...
